Abstract

570,439. Cycle forks. BALLAMY, L. M., and SHEEPSHANKS, R. H. July 30, 1943, No. 12428. [Class 136 (iii)] Relates to bicycles and like vehicles in which the front fork 13 is pivoted at 22 to a bracket 14 on the steering stem 12 which is pivoted as usual in the steering head 11, the upper end of the fork being adjustably connected at 23 by slotted clamping means to the steering stem to allow the rake or castor angle of the fork to be adjusted. According to the present invention, the clamping means comprise a nut 24, Fig. 1, or 45, Fig. 2, screw-threaded on the steering stem 12 and a closed slot 41 in a transverse plate 32 fixed to the stem 12 which extends through the slot, so that on tightening the nut the stem and fork are clamped together. In the construction shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the fork comprises a pair of tubes 25, 26 spaced apart by a tube 27 and secured by a bolt 30. The upper ends of the fork tubes are rigidly connected by the plate 32. The steering stem 12 is secured to the spacing tube 27 by a T-socket 35 and rotates in bearings 36, 39 in the steering head 11. After adjustment is made, the fork is clamped in its new position by tightening the bolt 30 and the nut 45 which clamps a serrated washer 44 on a serrated part 42 of the plate 32. In a modification, the upper end of the fork is adjusted along the plate 32 by a screw. According to the Provisional Specification, the adjustment may be made by rack-and-pinion or worm gearing, the pivot 22 may comprise a rubber torsion sleeve, and the fork may include springing means for the wheel axle, the lower ends of the fork tubes being telescopic and enclosing springs.
