[Class 69 (i)] In fuel tanks for aircraft &c. in which opposite end or side walls are connected together by tie-rods, one or each end of each tierod is secured to an interior supporting member mounted on a separate end or side unit of the tank in spaced relation to the main wall of said unit, said wall being initially provided with an aperture through which access to the tie-rod fastening means may be had, but which is afterwards closed by a suitable member. As shown, a tank of Al. &c. comprises a body 1 with dished end units 2, 2a, welded thereto and tied together by rods 3. Pairs of parallel angle iron stiffeners 4 are secured inside the end units, and secured thereto by riveting, welding, &c. are channel-sectioned brackets 5 opposite apertures 6, 6a in the end units. One end of each tie-rod 3 may be secured to the end tmit 2a, before or after the end unit is welded to the body, by a welded flange 7 secured by studs &c. 10 to a ring 8 riveted to the corresponding bracket 5. The other end of each tie-rod is threaded for engagement with a threaded boss 13 with a flange 14 which, after adjustment of the parts, is secured to the other bracket 5 by studs &c. 16 passing through a backing plate 15 riveted to said bracket 5. After assembly, the apertures 6, 6a are closed by welded plates 11, 11a. If desired, both ends of each tie-rod may be secured by threaded bosses 13.
