Abstract

567,103. Distilling water &c. WALKER, C. BELL-, and BRITISH MOTOR BOAT MANUFACTURING CO., Ltd. March 2, 1943, No. 3439. [Class 32] Distillation apparatus, suitable for the distillation of water on lifeboats and for the recovery of solvents, of the kind in which the boiler forms a unitary structure with an internalcombustion engine and is heated by exhaust therefrom comprises in combination therewith condensing apparatus of the evaporator-condenser type having two inlet pipes, one for connection to the steam space and the second connected to the liquid space of the boiler and having two delivery pipes, one for leading condensate and the other for leading boiler liquid to a flow meter, and control means for controlling the flow of boiler feed and condensate. The plant comprises a water boiler 12 surrounding the cylinder head of an internal-combustion engine 10 and heated by exhaust gases therefrom passed through conduits immersed in the boiler and leading to a take-off 50 ; a water supply tank 14, a feed heater 22, condensers 18, 20, a water heater 30, and a flow meter 112 with pumps 16, 148, 26, 28, 24, driven off the engine for circulating the liquids. The feed water is supplied to the tank 14 and is pumped thence by pump 16 through coil 58 and line 56 to the preheater 22 supplying the boiler 12. The cooling water for the condensers is supplied from an outlet 44 at the bottom of the boiler 12, the water flowing via the pipe 102 first through condenser 84 and thence through pipe 104 to the second condenser 84, and the residual brine being pumped from the system by a pump 24 through the sight glass 114 of the flow meter. Steam formed in the condensers is taken through pipes 91, 142 to the jacket 60, while condensate formed in the jacket 60 and in the condensers 18, 20 is removed through conduits 82, 146 by pumps 28, 26, 148 to the sight feed 114. The flow of condensate and brine passed through the system can thus be compared at the flow meter 112 and the supply of brine from the tank 14 correlated therewith by controlling the pumps. Steam passes from the boiler through a dome 38 provided with a spray arrester to the condenser 84 through a pipe 40 provided with a three-way valve 92 so that part of the steam may be diverted through a pipe 138 to heat water in a pot 132 provided with a jacket 134 through which the exhaust gases are passed. A motor 154 may be driven off the shaft 152 for heating coils 72 in the feed heater 22 which may be combined with the feed tank and preheater 14.
