Abstract

912,762. Cooling systems for engines. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. July 5, 1961 [July 12, 1960], No. 24316/60. Class 64 (3). [Also in Group XXVI] Oil supplied to the bearings of a gas-turbine engine 10 is cooled in a heat-exchanger 18 by means of fuel flowing from a reservoir 16 through a pipe 17 and the pass 18<SP>1</SP> of the heatexchanger 18 to an outlet pipe 19 leading to the burners of the gas turbine, a valve-controlled by-pass pipe 46 being provided in the pipe 19 so that part of the fuel may be returned selectively to either the reservoir 16 or to the inlet of the heat-exchanger 18 via pipes 51 and 52 respectively. The capacity of the reservoir 16 is much greater than that of the pass 18<SP>1</SP>. A pump 33 pumps oil from a tank 32 through a duct 45 to an annular manifold 44 surrounding the bearing 31 of the turbine shaft 30, the oil then passing along the interior of the shaft which it leaves via a manifold 39. The returning oil passes through a duct 38 to a valve 35 which returns it to the oil tank either through the pass 18<SP>11</SP> of the heat-exchanger 18 or through a by-pass duct 41. The valve 35 and the valve 50 in the fuel by-pass pipe 46 are controlled in accordance with the temperature of the fuel leaving the heat-exchanger by means of a thermostat 57 which is set so that at low fuel temperatures all of the oil and all of the fuel entering pipe 46 pass through the heatexchanger. As the temperature of the fuel rises an increasing amount of fuel from pipe 46 is returned to the reservoir, correspondingly less being led to the heat-exchanger, and a diminishing amount of oil, reducing to zero at a fuel temperature greater than 75‹ C., flows through the latter. Additional features of the apparatus include main and backing fuel pumps 26 and 22, a pressurizing valve 47 in the fuel by-pass pipe 46 and a one-way valve 53 in the pipe 52.
