Abstract

565,898. Screw propellers. McNAB, N. S., and MANGANESE BRONZE & BRASS CO., Ltd. June 8, 1943, No. 9231. [Class 114] The pitch of a ship's propeller is varied by a hydraulically-actuated piston 1 fixed to a shaft 2 slidable in the hollow propeller shaft 4, and is held locked in its new position after the hydraulic pump has been cut out of action by a nut 21 on a screwed portion of the shaft 2. The nut is such that it cannot be driven by the shaft and so must be rotated when it is desired to change the pitch simultaneously with admission of fluid pressure to one side or other of the piston. The rotation of the nut may be effected manually if the propeller shaft is at rest, or, when it is rotating by bringing one or other of two braking elements 18, 19 into engagement with one of two drums 5, 6 that have toothed surfaces 10, 9 engaging a planet wheel 11 connected through gearing to the nut 21. The longitudinal movement of the shaft 2 turns the blades 29 by means of links 30 connected to crank-pins 27 on the blade bosses.
