1,025,024. Variable pitch marine propellers. HUNDESTED MOTORFABRIK A.S. Nov. 9, 1962 [Nov. 9, 1961], No. 42399/62. Heading B7V. An adjusting device for the pitch of a marine propeller comprises an hydraulic piston 2 (Fig. 1, not shown), and cylinder 3, 4, 5, both rotatable with the propeller shaft 1. The piston 2 is secured to the shaft 1 and the cylinder 3, 4, 5 is axially movable with respect to the shaft 1 to effect pitch-adjusting movement of the rod 11 connected to the cylinder 3, 4, 5 through the valve 8 and a pin 9. The spool 8 is connected to the end 5 of the cylinder 3, 4, 6 by a flange 6 and is provided with circumferential grooves 18 and 19 separated by a land 20 and connected to each side of the piston through passages 21, 23, 24 and 25, and passage 22 respectively. A valve housing 14 is movable axially on the spool 8 between the flange 6 and stop ring 13 by a control lever 16 pivoted at 17 and is provided with grooves 26, 27 and 28 separated by lands 29 and 30. The groove 27 is connected to an hydraulic liquid supply line 31 and the grooves 26 and 28 to a reservoir return line 32. The arrangement provides that when the housing 14 is moved to the flange 6 or stop ring 13, liquid is caused to flow to one side of the piston 2 and effect a pitch adjusting movement of the rod 11. Movement of the cylinder 3, 4, 5 also moves the spool 8 and the supply of liquid is only maintained and consequently movement of the piston 2 as long as the housing 14 is moved manually by the lever 16 to keep the grooves in alignment. If the housing is not moved axially the spool 8 eventually moves to the neutral position to maintain the pitch at a particular setting. The cylinder may be fixed to the shaft and the piston movable with respect thereto. The valve spool may be formed in the cylindrical wall of the cylinder or it may be disposed on the opposite side of the cylinder to the connection with the pitch. adjusting rod.
