496,022. Screw propellers. ESCHER WYSS MASCHINENFABRIKEN AKT.-GES. March 15, 1938, No. 8000. Convention date, April 1, 1937. [Class 114] In hydraulically controlled variable-pitch airscrews, a checking means is incorporated for holding the blades at a fixed pitch when the pressure of the main actuating means falls below a certain value. Each blade 2 has an eccentric pin 3 which is connected by a rod 4 with a cylinder 5 which is mounted coaxially with the propeller shaft upon a hollow tubular member 6 which has in its walls supply and return ducts 7, 8. The cylinder 5 is divided into two parts 10, 11 by a piston 9 carried by the centre tube 6. The cylinder 5 is provided with a rib 22 which co-operates with a fixed member 23 on the boss to prevent rotation and these ribs carry ratchet teeth members 12 adapted to co-operate with a tongue 21 on a sleeve 19, the tongue being moved into and out of the ratchet by means of a lever connection with a piston 14 subjected on one side to a spring pressure 16 and on the other side to hydraulic pressure obtained by fluid supplied through a pipe 25. When this supply is the same as that for the main actuating cylinder 5 it is arranged that if the pressure falls below a value determined by the spring 16 then the piston 14 moves to bring the locking tongue 21 into engagement with the ratchet teeth 12. In addition, if it is desired definitely to lock the gear, liquid at high pressure is supplied under the control of a valve connected with this pipe 25. In an alternative form, instead of the three control members acting upon a single ring 19, they may each separately act upon tongue members which coact in that case with three such sets of ratchet teeth as 12.
