[Class 136 (iii)] [Also in Group XXXII] In a front wheel fork b for a cycle, motor cycle, &c. connected by linkage with the rotary steering pillar f in the fixed head a and in which a spring j, or springs, cushions relative vertical movements between the fork and the pillar, rebound of the spring is checked by a hydraulic damping device pivotally connected at one end to the fork, or to an extension of one of the links and pivotally connected at the other end to a link member which is itself pivotally connected at one end to the steering pillar f, the connection of the damping device with the link member being adjustable along the member to vary the damping effect. As shown, a damping device is mounted at each side of the fork, each device being pivoted at its lower end to an extension r of the link g and, at its upper end, carrying a trunnion pin n for engaging one of a series of holes m in the link member d. Alternatively, the trunnion pin may be formed with an eye working as a nut on a rotatable screwed rod. Each damping device comprises an inner cylinder s opening at u into a concentric outer cylinder t to provide a small displacement chamber beyond the stroke of the piston v which contains a ball-controlled passage w. A cylinder y on the piston-rod z encases the parts.
