Abstract

585,122. Shock-absorbing cycle forks. HARDY, S. W. Feb. 6, 1945, No. 2990. [Class 136 (iii)] [Also in Group XXXII] Shock absorbing suspension means for a motor-cycle comprise a pair of telescopic legs 1 forming the furcations of a wheel carrying fork and incorporating gaseous fluid shock absorbing means controlled by a single hydraulic damper 7. The legs 1 depending from and fixed to a bridge piece 5 are provided with a cushion of compressed air between their ends and pistons 9 which slide in the legs. The supply of compressed air may be replenished through valves 10 and the pistons lubricated by changing hollow piston rods 8 with oil, these rods sliding through the bridge piece 5 and being fixed to the cross bars 6, 13. The hydraulic check device 7 compresses an oil cylinder 23 fixed at its lower end to the bridge piece 5 and shrouded at its upper end by a sleeve 27 fixed to the lower cross-bar 6. The cylinder 23 contains a plunger 21 and is filled with oil on both sides of the plunger, bleed holes 22 being provided. A needle valve 24 controls the orifice of the piston and comprises the lower end of a spindle 25 threaded in the top of the cylinder 23 and fitted at its upper end above the cross bar 13, with a knob 26 foradjustment.
