Abstract

606,617. Forked wheel mountings for cycles. DOUGLAS (KINGSWOOD), Ltd., and HALLIDAY, G. F. Jan. 16, 1946, No. 1567. [Class 136 (iii)] In a forked wheel mounting comprising a pair of tubular limbs which are rigidly connected to cross members pivoted to the steering head, and the wheel axle is carried between the free ends of a pair of wheel arms pivoted to the lower ends of the respective limbs and urged downwards by coiled compression springs, the springs are contained within the limbs and extend upwards towards the swivel mounting. The lower end of the spring 24 abuts against a cross-head member 26 comprising upper piston 27 and lower piston 28 connected by strips 29, 31. A limb 33 is connected to the piston 27 by a gudgeon pin 34. A pivot pin 37 connects link 33 with one end of internal arm 38, the other end of which has a boss 40 splined to a spindle 41, the boss being clamped between flange sleeves upon the wheel arm 22. The member 26 slides up and down within limb 12 as the wheel vibrates. To damp the movement, the lower part of the limb closed by a cap 51 contains fluid 55. The lower portion 28 has a partition 56 with a stud 57 and a nut 58 and a valve disc 59 of sheet metal, slidable upon the stud 57 and when raised the disc closes a circular series of holes 60. A groove 61 communicates between the two members 27, 28. The wheel is provided with a brake applied by a lever 66 and has a link 67 pivotally connected to a backplate 65 at 68 and to the fork limb 12 at 69. In a modification, the spindle 41 is fitted with a quadrant, having teeth arranged to mesh with the teeth of a rack connecting parts 27, 28.
