Abstract

579,900. Motor-cycle forks. BIRMINGHAM SMALL ARMS CO., Ltd., PERKINS, H., and PERRIGO, A. E. March 8, 1945, No. 4460/44. [Class 136 (iii)] [Also in Group XXXII] A telescopic front fork comprises a fluid seal 17 on the lower end portion of an upper tubular member 1, a tube 25 movable with a lower tubular member 13 and having a series of ports 33 arranged normally above and below the fluid seal 17 to allow passage of fluid between the tubular members 1, 13, the construction of the fluid seal 17 being such as to prevent direct fluid flow from the member 13 to the member 1 on compression of the fork, but to allow direct fluid flow between them on extension of the fork. The fluid seal consists of a bush 17 having clearances 27 which are closed by a valve 19 under pressure of the fluid during compression of the fork. The damping is progressive since the number of ports 33 within the member 25 diminishes proportionally with compression. A piston 29 fixed to the tube 25 serves to expel fluid from the tube 1 on extension of the fork. During this action part of the fluid passes directly through the valve 19 and part through the holes 33, the damping thus being partly progressive. A spring 31 limits the recoil and a further spring (not shown) is mounted between a gland 21 and the lower of the two points at which the fork is secured to the steering head. The wheel axle is mounted in a lug 15. Specification 571,486 is referred to in connection with the construction of the gland 21.
