Abstract

548,170. Vehicle wheels. ZIPPER, E. June 24, 1938. No. 18779. [Classes 144 (i) and 144 (ii)] Single or twin detachable wheels are formed with coned surfaces 9 of small axial width, substantial diameter, and a conicity of 14 to 20 degrees to engage a corresponding surface 11 on a fixed-hub flange 8, the arrangement being such that the torque stresses are transmitted through the frictional engagement of these surfaces. The attachment-bolts 12 pass through bolt-holes in the wheel disc with clearance, and clearances are also provided between the wheels and the fixed hubs to ensure the driving engagement of the coned surfaces. In the twin-wheel structure shown in Fig. 5, the outer wheel is clamped by a flange 25 having a coned periphery and splined on the fixed hub. When made of light metal, the rim may be transversely corrugated, as indicated at 13, Fig. 1, and a flat seating for the tyre is provided by a metal band 14 encircling the rim base.
