539,743. Vehicle wheels. MARTIN, J. V. Jan. 8, 1940, No. 429. [Class 144 (i)] The suspension rubber-spoke elements of wheels of the kind described in Specifications 520,987 and 527,989 are now secured directly to the hub, or to the hub and brake-drum, by means of pins, screws, or the like. similar devices being used, where adaptable, for connections. between the tread and the spokes, or other parts of the wheel. Figs. 1 and 2 show a typical form comprising two sets of rubber spokes having diagonal ribs 8 and webs 9, the inner set being clamped between a flange 6 on the,hub 3 and an angle-ring 6<SP>1</SP> on the brake-drum 4 by screws 12 threaded into plugs 13 which are fitted in sleeves 11 engaging the inner ends of the spoke-elements. Similar means are shown for connecting the inner and outer spokes, and the latter set to the tread rings 16, Fig. 9, shows a modification comprising a single set of spokes fitted with an ordinary pneumatic tyre. Fig. 13 shows a further modification in which the inner ends 7' of the spokes 7 are shaped to straddle the hub-flange 6 which extends over the brake-drum 4. In this modification, the spokes are shown secured to the flange 6 and the tread by headed pins 13'. The inner ends 7<SP>1</SP> of the spokes are carried by yokes' 13b formed in halves hinged together at 13c. The outer half of each yoke is welded to the flange 6 and, after removal of a fastening-pin, the inner halves may be swung clear of the brake-drum to permit detachment of the flange 6 and the wheel-body as a unit.
