Abstract

533,089. Coating webs. MERRILL, C. J. Oct. 4, 1939, No. 27190. [Class 140] Coating material in semi-liquid form is applied to both sides of a web and streams of air are directed against both sides of the web counter to its direction of travel. A web 14 has applied to it by rolls 2, 2a, excess coating material, after which it passes between collector chambers 3, 3a, air-jets 4, 4a and over an auxiliary air nozzle 6 and deflector plate 7, which, in conjunction with deflector surfaces 12, 12a on the collector chambers 3, 3a serve to position the web between the air-jets 4, 4a. Surplus coating material removed by the air-jets is deposited in chambers 3, 3a. In modifications of the apparatus the surplus coating material is caused to impinge on the coating rolls which are surrounded by the collector chambers, or large outlet passages are provided adjacent the coating rolls which permit expansion of the air and deposition of its entrained coating material.
