637,717. Coating webs. NEW YORK & PENNSYLVANIA CO., Inc. May 14, 1946, No. 14517. Convention date, May 16, 1945. [Class 140] An air doctor for removing excess from and levelling the coating on webs, e.g. of paper, comprises means for ejecting gas in jets at high velocity adjacent the coated face of the web and guide means for deflecting and flattening the jets, thereby forming a gas brush. The coated web C is brushed at S by the gas brush formed by ejecting air from tube 41 through orifices 52 and deflecting and flattening the jets by plate 55. The excess coating material is collected by baffles 21 and may be returned to the coating applicator for re-use. The baffles also serve to recirculate air from the air brush after dissipating part of the air's velocity. The air may be humidified by steam ejected from pipe P. The coating, which may be a thixotrope, e.g. starch, may be applied by a fountain or applicator roll. Both sides of the web material may be coated in a continuous process.
