Abstract

530,002. Clutches. DYSON, S. N., and MATTINSON, D. H. June 1, 1939, No. 16205. [Class 80 (ii)] In a two-speed transmission for an aircraft supercharger &c. centrifugal clutches associated with each speed are selectively held inoperative by a hydraulic mechanism. The engine shaft 10 carries a clutch plate 25 and a gear 16 driving through gearing 17, 19, 20 a high speed shaft 21 carrying a clutch plate 26. The clutch casing 22 carries co-operating friction plates actuated by masses 29 pivoted to the casing and teeth 27 driving the supercharger shaft 43. Webs 34 form a hydraulic cylinder in which a piston 33 on a sleeve 32 is moved by fluid controlled by a valve 35. Collars on the sleeve engage extensions on the masses 29. A strong spring 37 and a weak spring 29 press on masses. Normally the sleeve 32 is in the position shown and the right-hand mass is free to engage the clutch 25 for slow speed drive. When the piston is moved to the left-hand position the left-hand mass is freed to engage the clutch 26 for the high-speed drive. The gears 16, 17 may be made of equal size to allow the use of either shaft 10 or 18 as the driving shaft.
