Abstract

452,359. Variable - speed gears. ZAHNER, R., 33, B³rglenstrasse, Berne, Switzerland. April 24, 1936, No. 11719. [Class 80 (ii)] A change-speed gear particularly for bicycles comprises gear-wheels 3 and 4 freely mounted upon a driving shaft 1 and a gear-wheel 8 freely mounted upon a driven sleeve 7, these gears being constantly in mesh with fixed gears 11, 12 and 13 respectively on a common shaft 15. Clutch members 6 and 9 slidably mounted on the shaft 1 and the driven sleeve 7 respectively are moved to couple either of gears 3 and 4 to the shaft 1 and either of gears 4 and 8 to the sleeve 7 to enable four speeds of the driven sleeve 7 to be obtained. The clutches are actuated by forks 22 which in turn are actuated by cam slots 25 in a liner-sleeve 26 which is guided by the wall of the gear casing or bracket and is rotated by a push-pull rod or wire 27 to effect the desired gear change. Spring-pressed plungers 17 are housed in recesses in the gears 3, 4 and 8 for engaging in corresponding recesses in the clutch members 6 and 9.
