Abstract

545,046. Variable-speed gearing. NAPIER & SON, Ltd., D., HALFORD, F. B., and BARLOW, B. W. Nov. 6, 1940, Nos. 16156/40 and 14129/41. [Class 80 (ii)] The impeller A of a super-charger may be driven at three different speeds by means of gears K<SP>2</SP>, K<SP>3</SP>, K<SP>4</SP> on a driving shaft K in constant mesh with pinions E<SP>3</SP>, H<SP>3</SP>, J<SP>3</SP>, on concentric driven shafts E, H, J, respectively, the gear drives being rendered operative by the engagement of fluid pressure actuated friction clutches. The impeller A is fixed to a casing C to which is slidably splined an annulus F having cone clutch members F<SP>2</SP>, F<SP>3</SP> and a partition F<SP>1</SP>. Co-operating with the members F<SP>2</SP>, F<SP>3</SP>, are clutch cones D<SP>2</SP>, E<SP>2</SP>, cone D<SP>2</SP> being fixed to a disc D<SP>1</SP> on a shaft D carying a casing D<SP>3</SP> similar to the casing C, and the cone E<SP>2</SP> being on a disc E<SP>1</SP> fixed to the shaft E. Slidably splined to the casing D<SP>3</SP> is an annulus G having clutch members G<SP>2</SP>, G<SP>3</SP> and partition G<SP>1</SP>. Co-operating with members G<SP>2</SP>, G<SP>3</SP> are clutch cones H<SP>2</SP>, J<SP>2</SP> the cone H<SP>2</SP> being on a disc H' on the shaft H and cone J<SP>2</SP> being on a disc J' on shaft J. Pressure fluid may be admitted to the spaces D<SP>x</SP>, E<SP>x</SP>, H<SP>x</SP>, J<SP>x</SP> to slide the annuli F, G, to actuate the friction clutches upon manual operation of a valve M, the pressure fluid flowing to the said spaces D<SP>x</SP>, &c., through pipes N, P, T, Q and passages in the shafts. For lowest speed clutch elements F<SP>2</SP>, D<SP>2</SP>, and G<SP>3</SP>, J<SP>2</SP>, are engaged; for second speed clutch elements F<SP>2</SP>, D<SP>2</SP> and G<SP>2</SP>, H', are engaged, and for third speed elements F<SP>3</SP>, E<SP>2</SP>, are engaged. In a modification all the clutch members are arranged on one side of the supercharger impeller the inner of clutching parts and the shafts to which they are secured being adapted to be moved axially for engagement and disengagement.
