Abstract

319,506. Lupton, H. R. Oct. 6, 1928. Casings. - In axial flow and centrifugal pumps the rotary motion of the fluid is obtained by tangential inlet nozzles, or by guide vanes in the pump inlet; the function of the impeller is to stop the rotary motion and the reaction of its blades in doing so provides "lift." In the form shown the suction chamber 1 has double volute passages 2, with tangential entries 3, 3. A central core 4 prevents cavitation and leads the fluid clear of the impeller boss 5. The im peller blades are so designed tha.t the fluid is discharged normally with axial motion only. Discharge guide vanes may be added to check rotation under abnormal conditions. The arrangement may be applied to multi-stage pumps, or a stage may be combined with stages of other types of pump.
