Abstract

524,816. Electromagnetic switches. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Feb. 7, 1939, No. 3991. Convention date, Feb. 8, 1938. [Class 38 (v)] In an electromagnetically - con - trolled self starter, wherein main contacts 2, 3 are first closed and then, after a time delay, step contacts 27, 28, 29, 30. all the contacts are operated by one magnet 11 which has two armatures 6, 13 connected in series in the main magnetic flux. the armature 6 having a large air gap and responding without time lag to close the main contacts and the armature 13 having a small air gap and operating under the influence of a checking mechanism 20 to close the step contacts. The armature 13 is connected by a link 15 to the pivoted contact-carrying member 17 which is retarded in its movement by a rack 19 engaging a pinion 21 of the checking mechanism 20. The movable contacts, the armature 6 and the member 17 are mounted on knife-edge bearings.
