Abstract

807,331. Electromagnetic switches. WEST & CO. Ltd., A., and PAVITT, F. J. Aug. 12, 1955 [Sept. 13, 1954], No. 26430/54. Class 38 (5). A contactor comprises an operating coil 1 surrounded by a rectangular magnetic frame 3a, 4, 3, 5, the plunger armature 2, when operated, being attracted towards a depending core projection 6 of the upper frame member 4 to rotate a main-contact carrying shaft 9 connected to the plunger by a crank 8. An economy resistance is inserted in the coil circuit upon attraction of the armature 2 by means of an auxiliary armature controlling a bridging contact 20 normally short-circuiting the resistance through a pair of fixed contacts 19 (only one shown). The auxiliary armature comprises two side arms 21, 22 connected by a cross-arm 23 and pivoted on studs 24 screwed into the lower frame member 5, leaf-springs 40 on the side arms engaging beneath the stud heads to ensure good magnetic contact with the member 5. After attraction of the plunger 2 a leakage flux attracts the auxiliary armature so that the cross-arm 23 engages the frame member 4 and an armature extension 26 moves a rod 25 carrying the contact 20, against the bias of return-springs 27, 28, to open the contacts 20, 21.
