Abstract

524,386. Clutches. HARDY, W. G. Jan. 26, 1939, No. 2741. [Class 80 (ii)] In a synchromesh mechanism keys H supported on spring-pressed balls H<2> are fitted between a driven shaft B and a sleeve D carrying the dog clutch. A driving shaft A carries teeth C and a synchronising cone E, and the driven shaft B has freely mounted thereon a gear B<2> which carries teeth C<1> and a cone E<1>. The sleeve D is keyed on the shaft B bears teeth C<2>, C' and houses the keys H slidable through ways in members F carrying cone surfaces E<2>, E'. The engagement of teeth C, C<2> couples the shaft A directly with the shaft B and the engagement of the teeth C<1>, C<3> couples the shafts A, B through gears A<2> B<3> on a lag shaft. To prevent engagement, for example, of the clutch teeth C, C<2> before synchronization is attained the sleeve D is moved to the left, Fig. 1, and the keys are moved by heads H<3>. Recessed ends of the keys move the member F to the left to engage the cones E, E<2>. On rotation of the member F tongues thereon register with slots on the sleeve D to allow the latter to be moved to engage the clutch teeth C, C<2>. This further movement of the sleeve D is accommodated by the heads H<3> riding out of depressions on the keys H which are pressed inwardly against the pressure of springs H'.
