Abstract

143,418. Stanley, G. E. June 24, 1919. Clutches; securing clutch-parts on shafts.-In motor-cycles &c., drive is transmitted from a driving-part, such as a sprocket-wheel C, to a shaft D through an intermediate sleeve A driven by a Weston or other clutch B and driving the shaft through a flexible coupling in which radial pins G<2> on a sleeve G splined on the shaft are pressed by a spring H into engagement with teeth F<3> on a disk F secured to the sleeve A. The clutch spring J bears against a flange A<5> on the sleeve A, the thrust being supported by a nut E on the shaft D, and against a ring K bearing through pins L and a disk M upon a flange C<5> on the wheel C, which carries a plate C' pressing the clutch plates against a flange A<2> on the sleeve A. Slight fluctuations of torque are dealt with by relative movement of the parts F, G; heavy fluctuations bring the sleeve G into contact with the ring K and remove the pressure of the spring J from, and thus allow slip of, the plate clutch, the total spring pressure being temporarily transferred to the flexible coupling F, G, which, in modifications, may be replaced by screwthread, coacting incline, triangular tooth, or other similar couplings. Means are provided for independently disconnecting the clutch.
