Abstract

518,471. Air-raid shelters; girders; trusses. NICOL, R. M., and COWAP, J. G. June 21,1938, No. 18428. [Classes 20 (i) and 20 (iv)] Frames for use in buildings, and particularly air-raid shelters, have the form of bow-string girders, the arc of which subtends a quarter of a circle. Thus, four such frames 1 may be jointed together as shown in Fig. 2 to form a complete circular frame for an air-raid shelter, the walls of which may be of corrugated iron, concrete or other material. The floor is formed by planks 12 resting on the chords 2 of the lower frame elements 1. Fig..10 shows a shelter comprising, as framework, a complete girder 1 and two fore-shortened girder elements 1<2>. The shelter is encased in concrete. Other assemblies of the frame elements are also described.
