Abstract

504,335. Setting and testing engine valve-gears. KURETSCHKA, F. J. Oct. 22, 1937, No. 29519/38. Divided out of 500,383. [Class 122 (iii)] The cams of a poppet-valve gear for elastic fluid engines are set angularly in relation to a graduated member and an indicator independently of the engine and before the valvegear is fitted thereto. The shaft 2 of the cams 3a carries an indicator 1. The cam operates the valve by means of a roller 4 and lever 5. A lever 9 indicates the opening and closing of the valve, and a dial 10 the angular position of the cam shaft which is moved by the handle 11. The setting of the valve may be recorded and corrected, and the valve gear adjusted. A diagrammatic form of the device is shown in Fig. 2, wherein the boxes which contain the valve gear is placed bodily on the test apparatus which is provided with test valves 16. The valve spindles 16 carry arms 18 by means of which the indicator 19 shows when the valves are closed. An indicator 20 adjusted on the shaft relative to the cams registers with the dial 21. A handle 22 controls the shaft. The position of the shaft at the opening or closing of the valves may be determined. The tops of the valves 16 are the same height above the face engaged by the cam mechanism as the tops of the engine valve spindles are above the cylinder face on which the cam mechanism is mounted. The apparatus facilitates standardization irrespective of the design and shape of the engine. In valve gear driving mechanism comprising bevel gearing on the main shaft connected through an incline transverse to similar gear operating the cam shaft of the gear on the side of the cylinder, the engine crank and cam-shaft crank are synchronized independently of the inclination of the transverse shaft. Adjustment of the gear is effected by adjustment of the bevel driving-wheel on the main shaft to suit the inclination of the transverse shaft. A toothed gauge 27a, Fig. 5, which engages the wheel 26a, and has a centre line L for indicating position, is used.
