549,982. Reversing; starting. WIDDOP & CO., Ltd., H., and WHITAKER, J. July 14, 1941, No. 8847. [Class 7 (v)] In valve mechanism for reversible directinjection oil engines in which the cam shaft 1 is driven from the engine crankshaft through a pair of skew gears 2, 3 the gear 3 is slidably keyed on the shaft 1 and is moved axially thereon to adjust the angular relationship of the gears by a hand wheel 12 which also operates a carrier shaft 25 provided with means for bringing into operation one of a pair of exhaust cams 11. As shown, the shaft 1 carries cams 9, 10, 11 for actuating fuel pumps 6, starting-air valves 7 and exhaust -valve tappet 8. To move the gear 3 axially, the hand-wheel 12 acts through pinions 14, 15 a quadrant 13, an arm 16 and a link 17 connected to a forked lever 18. The tappet 8 is actuated by one of the cams 11 according to the direction of rotation, either cam being brought into operation by the interposition of one of a pair of radius arms 22 actuated by eccentrics 24 on the carrier shaft 25, which is geared at 26, to the hand-wheel 12. Movement of the hand-wheel to. its extreme position in either direction causes a lug on the quadrant 13 to engage a lifter arm 27 for opening the master valve 28 for starting-air.
