Abstract

276,814. Marks, E. C. R., (Motorwagenfabrik Berna Akt.-Ges.). July 31, 1926. Stopping; starting. - In an arrangement for braking a four-stroke engine by rendering the inlet valve inoperative and interposing an additional exhaust cam, decompression during the compression stroke of the engine piston is effected in an intermediate position of the gear, the inlet cam remaining operative and the oblique lateral face of the additional exhaust cam causing the decompression. As shown, admission and exhaust cams E, A<1>, are mounted on a cam shaft which can be axially displaced and then turned through 90‹, or the axial and angular displacements of the cam shaft may take place simultaneously. In position I, Figs. 4 and 7, the cams act normally on the cam bowls 2, 3; in position II, the cams E, A<1> are still operative, the cam bowl 3 also being lifted momentarily during the compression stroke by the oblique face of the additional cam A<2>; and in position III, the cam shaft having been turned through 90‹, the inlet cam E is inoperative and the cams A', A<2> open the exhaust valve during the inlet and power strokes. The decompression in position II may be used to facilitate starting. The cam shaft S and the throttle valve are both controlled by a lever 4 on the steering wheel 5, Fig. 12, which is moved in one direction to open the throttle valve and in the opposite direction to effect decompression and braking. The shaft 15 of the lever 4 carries a worm 16 in engagement with a worm wheel 17, on the shaft 20 of which are rigidly mounted levers 18, 19. The free ends of these. levers engage slotted links 21, 22 which are pivotally connected respectively to an arm 26 on the shaft 27 of the throttle valve and to an arm 23 on a. shaft 24 carrying a pinion for moving the cam shaft axially.
