[Class 43] Apparatus for assembling buckles and straps in the manufacture of adjustable straps, e.g. shoulder straps of undergarments, comprises jaws 316, 318, Figs. 15 and 16, for holding a pair of buckles in spaced relationship with an aperture of one buckle in alignment with an aperture of the other, and a blade 320 which is mounted on a rod 322 slidably mounted in a guide 326 and is adapted to engage a strap disposed upon the upper jaw and force it through the aligned apertures of said buckles, the rod 322 being actuated by a treadle through a cord &c. 362 secured to a lever 332 from which it is suspended. The jaws each comprise opposed members 364, 366 located in slots 368 in a supporting bar 312, the members 364 being fixed by pins 370 and the members 366 being pivoted at 372 and urged towards the fixed jaws by springs 374. Grooves are provided in the inner edges of the jaws to receive the sides of the buckles, and the fixed jaws are fitted with members 378 which guide the movable jaws relatively thereto and also act as stops to position the buckles after insertion of the latter. In modified apparatus, Figs. 1 and 6, means for automatically feeding the buckles to the jaws is provided, for example double-eyelet buckles 268 from a vertical tube 70 to the upper jaw 26 and singleeyelet buckles 266 from a tube 80 to the lower jaw 28, the jaws being spaced by a block 30. The outlet ends of the tubes 70, 80 are detachably mounted in holders 75, 82 secured to the block 30, and the end buckles in the tubes are transferred from the tubes to the jaws by a plunger 100 which is slidable in the said block and is formed with a reduced end defining opposed shoulders 106, 108 for engagement with the buckles. Actuation of the plunger 100 is effected by a treadle through links 130, 132, 144 and a stem 122 projecting from the rear thereof, and the buckle tubes are provided with weight and spring means 78, 88 respectively for feeding the buckles to the plunger. In addition to the blade 37 for thrusting the strap through the buckles, a strap-withdrawing hook 39 is provided.
