Abstract

686,468. Machines for assembling buckles and straps. STEELS & BUSKS, Ltd. Feb. 20, 1951 [March 8, 1950], No. 5851/50. Class 43. In a machine for assembling buckles and straps means for releasably holding two buckles, one single-eyed and one double-eyed, are arranged side by side so as to hold each of the buckles horizontally disposed, means being provided for thrusting a strap through said buckles. The buckle-holding means carried by a frame 37 comprise two pairs of jaws lying in a common horizontal plane, each pair consisting of a fixed inner jaw 41 and an outer jaw 43 pivoted and spring-urged towards it. The cooperating edges of the jaws are grooved at 47 to form feed tracks for the buckles. The buckle magazines fit side by side in a box 39 carried by the frame 37, and are each provided with a longitudinal slit for viewing the number of buckles therein. The right-hand jaws, viewing Fig. 4, receive the double-eyed buckles. Two parallel, horizontal bars 34, Fig. 3, having at their working ends ribs 35 of reduced width which are stepped to provide shoulders, are slid forwards beneath the magazines on depression of a treadle, the shoulders serving to eject the lowermost buckles from the magazines into the feed tracks of the jaws. The double-eyed buckle 57 is pushed further forward than the singleeyed 56. Forward movement of the bars 34 is limited by the engagement of a link connected thereto with an adjustable stop-screw 60. A vertically reciprocable head 24 carries three strap-threading blades 48, 49, 50 which are aligned with the eyes of buckles held in the jaws 41, 43; the blade 50 ends in a hook 51, the blade 49 which is longer than the other two being recessed at the front to give access to the hook. By selectively draping a length of ribbon over a buckle, engaging it over the hook 51, and depressing or releasing a treadle to lower or raise the blades for the purpose of forcing the ribbon down through or pulling it up through the buckles, Figs. 7 to 11 (not shown), the ribbon is threaded through the buckles.
