[Class 14 (i)] Relates to a system of carbonating liquids wherein the liquid is first de-aerated and then is maintained under an atmosphere of carbondioxide while it is cooled, passed to a heatinsulated container, and finally taken to a carbonating apparatus. The de - aerating apparatus comprises a chamber 1 with windows 2, an outlet 8 for de-aerated liquid, an inlet 16 for liquid and a pipe 15 with connections to a vacuum pump and a source of carbon-dioxide under low pressure. The pipe 8 includes a valve which opens when the chamber I is filled with liquid and closes when it is empty. The pipe 16 is controlled by a valve 51 and delivers to spray pipes 53 54. The pipe'15 includes two chambers 18, 19, the chamber 18 being connected to the source of carbondioxide. Movable in the pipe 15 is a piston 29 which is linked to a lever 45 and is urged by a spring 64 to the position shown, in which passages 38 in it connect the chamber 18 to the chamber 1. At this time, carbon-dioxide enters the chamber, and de-aerated liquid is discharged by the pipe 8. When the chamber 1 is emptied, a float 12 engages a lever 49 to rock the lever 45 to raise the piston 29 and open the valve 51. The chamber 1 is now connected to the vacuum pump through the chamber 19 and ports 40, 27, 28, 30, and the supply of carbon-dioxide is cut off. The lever 45 is locked in this position by a lever 59. Liquid discharged into the chamber 1 as a fine spray by the pipes 53, 54 is do-aerated as a result of the evacuation of the chamber 1, and collects in the chamber. The float 12 rises until it engages a member 63 to trip the lever 45 and lower the piston 29, and the cycle is then repeated. A splash guard 57 is provided above the pipes 53, 54.
