Direct air pressure apparatus, automatic ; vacuum apparatus; raising by stages ; valves, actuation and arrangement of. - Apparatus for raising liquids from deep wells &c. comprises two series of chambers 1, 2 so arranged that the chambers of one series alternate vertically with those of the other series, each series being alternately placed under relatively high and low pressures, such as atmosphere and vacuum, by means which are automatically reversed by the rise and fall of liquid in a control chamber. The lowest chamber of one series is connected to the, liquid 5 by a pipe 4 with a non-return valve 6, and each chamber in one series is connected to the chamber next above it in the other series by a pipe 7 provided with a non-return valve. The chambers 1 are connected at the top to a common pipe 10 communicating by a pipe 35 with a port 27 controlled by a slide valve 11; and the chambers 2 are connected to a common pipe 12 communicating by a pipe 34 with a port 30 controlled by a valve 13. The valves are actuated by a float 15 in one of the chambers 1 through a linkworh 16, 22, 17 and a sliding rod 14, which engages slots 19 in the valves and carries pins 18, 18a in the path of the link 17. The movement of the valves is accelerated by a spring lever 20. When the chambers 1 are empty and the chambers 2 full, the valve 11 is in position to connect the chambers 1 to a source of relatively high pressure, such as atmosphere, through pipes 35, 36, while the valve 13 connects the chambers 2 to a source of relatively high pressure, such as atmosphere through pipes 34, 33. Liquid then flows up from the chambers 2 through pipes 7 to the chambers 1 until the float 15 rises and reverses the valves 11, 13, causing the chambers 2 to fill and the chambers 1 to discharge. A float-controlled valve 8 in each chamber controls the liquid outlet and prevents the chamber from completely emptying. The pipes 7, 10, 12 may be arranged inside the chambers to adapt the apparatus for use in narrow wells &c.
