Abstract

486,283. Vehicle opening-tops. FIAT SOC. ANON. Oct. 20, 1937, No. 28645. Convention date, Nov. 3, 1936. [Class 108 (i)] Relates to a motor-vehicle body having fixed side walls 2 and a roof-opening extending forwardly near to the windscreen 3, a foldable cover 7 of fabric &c. for the opening being so held by stretchers pivoted to the side walls that, when the cover is in its closed position, its reinforced edges rest on the adjacent portions of the roof, means being provided for detachably fastening the front edge of the cover to the front edge of the opening. According to the invention, a pair of stretchers 23 attached to the front edge of the cover is pivoted to the side walls approximately mid-length of the opening and on or above the level of the side windows, while one or more other pairs of stretchers 19, 25, 21 attached to the rear portion of the cover are pivoted to the side walls in proximity to the waist-rail of the body. The front stretchers 23 are connected by a cross-bar 23a, Fig. 5, incorporated in a front bar 8 on the cover and the oppositely-disposed rear stretchers 19, 25, 21 by tubular crossmembers 9 secured to longitudinal elastic strips in the cover. A drainage channel 13 extending around the edges of the roof-opening serves also as a support for the rubber-studded ends of the cover and a rubber &c. strip 5 on the front edge of the roof-opening is maintained, when the opening is covered, by one or two fastening devices each comprising a wedgeshaped pin 16, Fig. 5, fixed to the bar 8 and engaging in an eye formed in a projection 15 from the channel 13, the pin being locked in position by a spring-pressed bolt 18 slidable in a box 26 integral with the pin. A celluloid rear-window may be provided in the cover.
