Abstract

Nitrocellulose is stabilized by boiling with an aqueous solution of an alkali or alkaline earth nitrite. Solutions of 0,5--1,0 per cent and a time of boiling of 3--4 hours are adequate, although concentrations up to 3--4 per cent may be required with acid nitrocelluloses. In practice, the nitrocellulose is washed first with water and then with sodium bicarbonate solution, next boiled with sodium nitrite solution, and finally washed again. The method is effective with nitrocelluloses made with fortified spent nitrating acids.
