Abstract

456,420. Centrifugal separators. BIRD MACHINE CO., Neponset Street, South Walpole, Massachusetts, U.S.A. May 7, 1935, No. 13464. Convention date, Dec. 11, 1934. [Class 23] Finely divided solids are separated from the liquid in which they are suspended by passage through a number of centrifugal separators, different grades of solids being deposited in each. The arrangement is applied particularly to the treatment of clay. Each separator bowl 10 is of truncated conical form with the small end open, and with an annular opening 23 in the plate 11 at the large end. The bowl is rotated by a gear-wheel 14 and a helical blade 16 on a sleeve 17 is rotated at a speed different from that of the bowl by means of a gear-wheel 19. A mixture of freshly quarried clay and water is supplied through the pipe 21 to the bowl 10 of the first separator, with the addition if desired of some deflocculating agent. The coarse impurities such as sand and mica are thrown to the wall and are carried by the blade 16 to the open end of the bowl and the trough 22 from which they may be taken for further treatment. The liquid passes through the opening 23 to the trough 24 and is supplied to the inlet pipe of the second separator which removes the coarse clay solids and the liquid then passes to the third separator. This removes the last of the solids and its centrifugal separating action may be assisted by electrical action as described in Specification 456,353. Instead of using three separate machines, the material can be run three times through one machine.
