Abstract
291,931. Bennett, C. H. April 28, 1927. Variable-speed friction gearing suitable for motor-vehicle comprises at least one pair of parallel driving-shafts E, E<1> geared together by a toothed pair F, F<1> and carrying rollers G, G<1> which engage mutually and which are moved together over the faces of discs J, J<1> upon a driven shaft H to vary the speed. In one arrangement shown in Fig. I, there may be a single firstmotion shaft B upon which a pinion C slides which engages gears D, D<1> alternatively for driving the shaft H in one direction or the other respectively. The same figure shows alternative means for reversing the drive. The shafts E, E' are supported in a bridle O<1> which can be turned right over so as to bring the rollers G, G<1> into engagement with the discs J<1>, J respectively. The discs are pressed inwards by springs K, and are feathered to the same shaft H. Rollers and discs mav have bevel edges G<2>, J<2>. In a form shown in Fig. III, the shafts E, E<1> are driven by two motors R, R<1> and' reversal is obtained by a bevel clutch reversing-- train X<3>.
