Abstract
An anti-friction metal especially for bearings is composed of a hypo-eutectoid steel which has been heated to a temperature between the Ac1 and Ac3 points and quenched in water or other suitable cooling medium. Alloying constituents which form solid solutions with the ferrite in the steel may be added to the latter and comprise manganese up to 2 per cent, silicon up to 1, chromium up to 3, tungsten up to 5, nickel up to 5, cobalt up to 5 and phosphorus up to 0,3, and the total amount of such additions should not exceed 6 per cent. The steel may be tempered after quenching.
