Abstract

478,453. Changespeed gearing. NICOL, T. S. Nov. 24, 1936, No. 32111. [Class 80 (ii)] Change - speed gearing suitable for vehicles comprises a toothed pinion 20 slidable on a driven shaft 19 by a mechanical relay set in motion by a manual lever 48, Fig. 1. For forward speeds, the pinion 20 is meshed alternatively with gears 17, 18 of equal size loose on a shaft 15 and driven at different speeds from a driving-shaft 11 which carries a gear 14 meshed directly by the pinion 20 for reversed drive. Between the pinion 20 and a transverse arm 22 which operates it, is a double-acting spring barrel 21, Fig. 2, with two springs 34, 36 and stops arranged so that the stroke of the arm 22 can be completed in both directions, and the pinion 20 follows into mesh when it can. The relay striking movement is effected by pivoting the arm 22 about the shaft 19 so as to bring two half-nuts 24 carried by the arm into engagement alternatively with screws 25, 26 constantly driven in opposite directions from the engine shaft 11. To effect a gear change, a quadrilateral slide 45 is slid axially by the hand lever 48. By oblique guides 44, a shuttle 37 is thus displaced transversely carrying with it the striker arm 22. A tongue 38 on the arm which slides in a longitudinal slot 39 in the shuttle 37 is thus disengaged from a cross slot 58 in a stationary block 57 while at the same time one of the half-nuts 24 is engaged with one of the power screws 25 or 26. The power shift of the barrel 21 then takes place and the pinion 20 slides into mesh when it can, while the tongue 38 drops back into another locking cross slot 58 with the manual lever 48 returned. to its original position by springs 47. During the speed change, a main clutch between the driven shaft 19 and a tail shaft (not shown) is momentarily opened. This clutch is shown schematically at 55. Displacement of the lever 48 rocks geared twin shafts 53 in opposite directions and these by rocking four cams 54 thrust the disc 55 right to open the clutch.
