Abstract

783,332. Change-speed gearing. MASSEYHARRIS-FERGUSON (SALES), Ltd. Aug. 14, 1953 [May 16, 1952], No. 12400/52. Class 80 (2). A change-speed gear for a tractor between parallel input and output shafts 60, 61, giving five forward speeds and one reverse, comprises loose gears 70, 71 on shaft 60 selectively clutchable to shaft 60 by a double claw clutch 69A, gear cluster 66, 67, 68 loose on shaft 60, gear 63 fast on shaft 60, gear 76 fast on shaft 61, gears 74, 75 slidably splined on shaft 61, and gear cluster 73A, 73B loose on shaft 61 but adapted to be clutched to gear 74 at 74A by rightward movement of the latter. The forward gear trains, from the neutral position shown through extra low gear to top gear, are as follows:- gears 63, 73A-73B, 66-68, 75, by rightward movement of gear 75; gears 63, 73A-73B, 66-67, 74, by leftward movement of 74; gears 63, 73A-73B, clutch 74A, by rightward movement of 74; clutch 69A, gears 70, 75, by rightward movement of clutch 69A; and clutch 69A, gears 71, 76, by leftward movement of clutch 69A. For reverse, an idler 77 is moved leftwards to engage 67, while remaining engaged with 74, the train being gears 63, 73A-73B, 66-67, 77, 74. In an alternative arrangement, gears 70, 71 form a cluster splined on shaft 60, gear 75 being slidable rightwards from neutral to engage 68 and gear cluster 70, 71 being slidable rightwards to engage 75 and leftwards to engage 76. The gear selector mechanism, operated by a ball-mounted lever 87, comprises four selector rods 78A ... 81A, Fig. 2, carrying forks 78... 81 controlling gears 74, 75, clutch 69A, gear 77, respectively, together with a selector rod 86 controlling an electric starter. A housing 94, pivoted at 95 so that it can swing laterally, has a fore-and-aft slot 96, in which the lower end 93 of lever 87 engages, and has a depending arcuate lateral rib 97 co-operating with the forked ends 78D ... 81D, 86C of arms 78C ... 81C, 86B secured to the rods 78A ... 81A, 86. Thus, during a transverse movement of lever 87 to engage its end 93 in any selected one of forks 78D ... SID, 86C, the housing 94 moves in unison therewith and rib 97 locks all the selector rods except that one whose fork is in register with end 93, which selected one can be moved by fore-and-aft rocking of lever 87, the resulting engagement of the displaced fork in the slot 96 then locking the housing 94 and lever 87 against transverse movement. For engagement of lever 87 with forks 79D, SID, it must be lifted slightly against a spring 89A, and it must be lifted still further for engagement with fork 86C. Some of the arms may be replaced by rocking levers, a detailed arrangement being described in the Provisional Specification. Specifications 774,271 and 783,333 are referred to.
