Abstract

Structural articles such as screws, bolts and tubes used in power plants and in situations where they are subjected to prolonged tensile stress at elevated temperatures are made from ferrous base alloys the surface portions of which have been nitrogenized to a depth of from 0,3 to 2 mm. Alloys containing carbon up to 1,5 per cent, silicon up to 3, manganese up to 3, chromium up to 20, aluminium up to 3, molybdenum tungsten, titanium vanadium or zirconium up to 3 and up to 20 of nickel or cobalt are referred to. In an example an alloy steel containing 0,33 per cent of carbon, 0,31 of silicon, 0,76 of manganese, 1,00 of chromium, 1,08 of aluminium and 0,25 of molybdenum, was quenched in water from 870 DEG C., reheated to 650 DEG C., and nitrogenized at 560 DEG C. for 100 hours, and the depth of the nitrogenized portion was 1,01 mm. The nitrogenizing temperatures used are from 500-800 DEG C. Specifications 174,580, [Class 72] and 345,659** are referred to.
