Abstract

441,488. Printing-machines. QUICK, C. G., BENNISON, W. E., and ALEXANDER, D. A. H., 109, Borough Road, London. July 17, 1934, No. 20936. [Class 100 (ii)] Tripping-arrangements ; inking-apparatus.- In a rotary intaglio printing-machine the printing-roller 1 and the ink fountain 8 are mounted at each end in a common slide 3 which can be moved in guides 4 by mechanism operated from a piston 16, Fig. 4, arranged in a double-acting cylinder 17. The mechanism may be a shaft 12 operated by a rack-andpinion from the piston, and fitted with a cam 11, Fig. 1, acting on rollers 10, in which case arcuate surfaces 11<1> on the shaft 12 take the load when the cylinder 1 assumes printing position, thus assuring that the printing- pressure reaction is taken as a radial load to the shaft 12, thence as a compressional load to the bearing blocks 12<1>, and that the cylinder 1 always returns to the same position for printing. The piston 16 may, in a modification, operate slides 52, Fig. 7, with ramps 55 for operating the rollers 10, the slides being preferably mounted on rollers 53, and being formed with a horizontal upper surface 56 upon which the rollers 10 rest when the roller 1 is in printing position. The slides 52 are operated by rack-and-pinion mechanism from a shaft 60 which is oscillated by a segmental gear 61 engaging a rack 62 on the rod 15 of piston 16. In a further modification the slides 3 are operated by screw-and-nut mechanism from the piston 16. The shaft 12 is capable of being controlled by hand-operated mechanism comprising selflocking worm gearing driven by chain-gearing from a hand wheel, one of the worm gears being freely mounted on its shaft and being capable of connection thereto by a handoperated coupling on clutch device. The ink-fountain 8 with its furnishing roller 9 is mounted in slides 7 which can be moved in guides attached to the slides 3 by means of pinions 33 engaging racks 31 on the slides 7. The pinions 33 are operated by self-locking worm gearing actuated by a wheel 38, when it is desired to lower the fountain 8 relatively to roller 1 in order to permit of withdrawal of the roller 1 from its bearings 2. These bearings are rotated to allow of this withdrawal by means of a pinion 23 and rack 24 operated by a rack 25 and pinion 26 driven by worm gearing from a hand-operated shaft.
