606,394. Printing-machines. GOSS PRINTING PRESS CO., Ltd. Jan. 14, 1946, No. 1271. Convention date, Jan. 12, 1945. [Class 100(ii)] A rotary printing-press unit 10 is constructed, to permit of easy accessibility to the inking-apparatus, of a pair of printing- couples 11, 12, Fig. 4, each comprising a printing-cylinder 14, 15 and impression cylinder 16, 17, Fig. 3, arranged in side by side relationship, a horizontal driveshaft 30 arranged transversely beneath said couples and a pair of vertical shafts 31 laterally spaced with respect to each other for gearing the printing-cylinders to the shaft 30. The shafts 31 are mounted in bearings in frames 27 of arch form arranged to leave a space 29 for the operator, and the inking-rollers are mounted in the frames 27, and are driven from the shafts 31. The printing-cylinders 14, 15 are geared by spur gears 36, 37 to the impression cylinders 16, 17, and adjustment of printing pressure is effected by the adjustment of eccentric bearings in which the impression cylinders are mounted, which adjustment can be made without producing faulty register by mechanism as described in Specification 434,864. The shaft 30 is driven by chain gear from motors 49, 49a and the unit 10 may be coupled to an adjoining unit 10a for synchronizing the drives. The couple 11 is reversibly driven to permit the unit to be used for perfected or multi-colour impressions, its drive shaft 31 having a bevel gear 32 engaged by bevel gears 33, 33a either of which can be driven as desired by a sliding clutch operated by a lever. The clutch can be put to a neutral position, and the bevel gears 33 for driving the couples 11, 12 act through a clutch which can throw out the drive to the couple 11 or 12, so that either couple can be used alone. The inking-rollers are mounted in the frames 27, and comprise duct rollers 23, reciprocating distributing rollers 20, 21, and transfer rollers. The rollers 20, 21, are reciprocated longitudinally by means of oscillating levers 81, 82 actuated by eccentrics 77, 78 driven by bevel gearing 72, 73 from the shafts of the printing-cylinders. The fountain rollers 23 are driven by worms 100 on the shafts 31 and worm gearing To adapt the roller 23 associated with the reversible couple to change of drive, two worm wheels 101, 101a are geared to the worm 100 and each worm wheel is connected to the roller by a uni - directional clutch, so that when the shaft 31 is reversed the drive is transferred from one driving train to the other.
