Abstract

433,132. Printing - machines. STRACHAN & HENSHAW, Ltd., FOWERAKER, T. S., and SARGENT, T., Whitehall Iron Works, Whitehall, Bristol. Feb. 6, 1934, No. 3933. [Class 100 (ii)] Inking-apparatus.-In a printing-machine using rapid drying inks having a high solid content, the forme-inking roller c of non-resilient material e.g. cast iron, steel, or glass, frictionally drives a similar non-geared duct roller d, and means are provided whereby these rollers continue to run after the forme roller b and impression roller a are brought to rest, so that drying of the ink during non-printing periods is prevented. In one form of driving device, Fig. 1, the rollers a, b are geared together by fast gears e, f and carry loose gears g, h meshing respectively with a gear o on a drive shaft m and a gear k fast on the shaft of the roller c. A second gear n on the shaft m normally engages a gear l fast on the shaft of the roller a. By axially moving the shaft m, the gears n, l are disengaged, bringing the rollers a, b to rest but permitting continued drive of the roller c through the gears o, g, h, k. In a modification, the inking - rollers are driven during non-printing periods by gearing from a slow running electric motor. The roller d is preferably set out of contact with the roller c so that it is driven by the ink film at a speed slower than that of the roller c. The duct i is removably supported by spring catches y<2> carried by brackets y<1> which are adjustable by screwed rods 10 to move the roller c out of contact with the roller b during non-printing periods. Inkagitating fingers p, Fig. 3, are carried by a member n which is slidably mounted on a bar v fixed to the duct i, and is reciprocated thereon by a block q reciprocated on a bar r fixed to the brackets y<1>, a forked arm s on the block q engaging a pin t on the member u. The block q is actuated by a cam y fixed to a gear z meshing with the gear k. The duct roller d, Fig. 6, is preferably mounted in ball bearings and has hollow unsupported ends whereby the shaft may flex somewhat while maintaining even contact of the roller with the roller c. The printing-formes may be prepared as described in Specification 432,716.
