Abstract

440,493. Gas turbines; rotary compressors. FISHER, F. D., and SIDDONS, B., 49, High Street, Beighton, near Sheffield. July 2, 1934, No. 19415. [Classes 110 (ii) and 110 (iii)] Combustible mixture for use in a gas turbine R<2> is compressed in a rotary compressor A of the outwardly-sliding vane type, the charge being ignited in the compressor at the time of minimum volume and released to the turbine through uncovered ports in substantially unexpanded form. Ignition may be by spark-plug or, after the engine has started, by flame passing through a gap in the casing from a chamber which has just been fired to the following compression chamber. The turbine rotor R is mounted on a fixed sleeve, and is geared to the power shaft C. upon which the rotor of the compressor A is mounted, by double-reduction gearing S, T, U, W, which also drives the oil pump and magneto. The vanes of the compressor are channel shaped and are fitted with packing plates A<1> which are pressed axially by wedges A<2>. Clock springs H act on the vanes and wedges.
