[Class 65 (i)] A collapsable or sliding door or gate is closed by a device comprising a cylinder containing a piston connected to the door through a linkage, the piston being acted on by a spring, assisted by the weight of the linkage, and moving slowly against the resistance of air in the cylinder until the stroke is nearly complete, when a byepass is opened to allow quick final closing. The device is shown applied to a sliding door, and the linkage comprises a member 17 pivoted to a fixed bracket 21, a member 18 pivoted to the door and, at an intermediate point, to the end of the link 17, and a member 19, pivoted at an intermediate point on the link 17 and having a slot engaging a pin on the end of the link 18. The cylinder 1 is pivoted to the link 17, and the piston-rod is connected adjustably to the lever 19. Opening of the door causes the linkage to rise and to draw out the piston, which compresses a spring (or two or more springs in series) in the cylinder, the closing movement being produced by the spring or springs assisted by the weight of the descending linkage. The closing movement is resisted by the air in the cylinder, which leaks out through a valve in the cylinder head, until the piston approaches the end of its stroke, when it passes the outer end of a byepass to allow free movement of the air and rapid completion of the stroke. The byepass may be formed by grooves in the cylinder, ports and passages in the cylinder wall or a short external pipe connecting ports in the cylinder.
