Abstract

350,140. Spring hinges and checks. HEATH, C. E., Heatherdene, Blackhall Lane, Sevenoaks, Kent. April 16, 1930, No. 12019. [Classes 65 (i) and 65 (ii).] In a door spring and fluid check apparatus combined with a hinge, shown open in Fig. 1, the cylinder 3 containing the spring and the check 10 are mortised into the door or doorpost behind the hinge leaf 2. The door spring 4 is compressed by a chain 6, attached to the other leaf 1, as the door is opened. The check has a piston 13, Fig. 3, with a stem 14 which passes through a gland 15 and the hinge leaf 2 so that it engages the leaf 1 during the final closing of the door. When the door is opened, the piston is pushed by the spring 23 until it is stopped, in the position shown, by the hollow plug 25, which has a breathing hole in its upper end. During this motion, fluid moves to the right of the piston through passages 21 and a non-return valve formed by a flexible washer 22 held against the piston by the spring 23. At the end of the closing movement of the door, the stem 14 is pushed in and the piston is moved to the right against the resistance of the fluid passing through passages 20, 24 ; the size of the passage 20 is varied by rotating the screw-threaded stem of the valve 18. The check and spring cylinders are fixed into the hinge leaf by bayonet joints; a special wrench for removing these cylinders or the ring-nut or gland of the check cylinder is described. The cylinders may be fixed to either leaf of the hinge, or one to each leaf.
