[Class 65 (i).] A spring-closing and fluid-check device of the floor type comprises a coiled compression spring or springs at one side of a casing, a fluid check device at one side of the spring or springs, and a cam on the door spindle having two cam surfaces on opposite sides of the spindle and in the same horizontal plane, the cam surfaces engaging respectively with a slide which acts on the spring or springs and with the check device or a member connected thereto. The device is shown as applied to a door opening in one direction only, the parts being shown in the position occupied when the door is opened 90‹ anti-clockwise. Two compression springs 16 abut at one end against an adjustable nut 17 on a guide rod 15 and at the other end against a slide 5 running in fixed guides 12 and carrying a roller 13. The check device comprises a cylinder 18, mounted on a pivot 19, and a plunger 11 connected to a bell-crank 10 which is mounted on a pivot at 22 and carries a roller 23 ; the inner end of the cylinder is provided with a ballcheck inlet valve 26 and an adjustable bleed valve of which the stem is shown at 27. A spring 24 surrounds the plunger rod, and bears against the end of the cylinder and the bell-crank. The door spindle 3 carries a cam 4 having one cam surface 8 for engagement with the roller 13 on the spring-operating slide, and an opposite cam surface 9 for engagement with the roller 23 on the check-operating crank 10. When the door is closed, the roller 13 rests in a hollow 8<a> of the cam, and the roller 23 is at the outer end of the straight surface 9. When the door is opened to the position shown, the roller 13 is forced out of the hollow, compressing the springs sharply, on to the surface 8, which gradually increases the compression of the springs up to 180‹ of opening. The cam surface 9 allows the roller 23 to move nearer the spindle 3 as the door is opened to the position shown, and the spring 24 can therefore draw the plunger 11 out of the cylinder ; if the door is opened further, on approaching the 180‹ the roller 23 rides up the left-hand side of the hollow 8<a> thus forcing the plunger a short distance into the cylinder and producing a slight checking effect. When the door is released, the springs 16 acting on the cam surface 8 cause it to close, and in closing from the position shown the cam surface 9 acts on the crank 10 to force the check plunger 11 into the cylinder 18 to cushion the movement. The cam may, if desired, be so shaped that no further movement is imparted to the slide 5 and crank 10 on opening the door beyond 90‹.
