[Class 99 (i)] A push-on air-pipe coupling is secured to a tyre-valve nipple 9 by a spring 7 which is located by a nut 16 on a plunger 2, movable within the coupling casing 1 and formed with an air connection 3, the spring 7 being of circular formation with parallel bent-out ends 6 projecting into a slot 5 which is formed in the wall of the casing 1 and is provided with two opposed inclined surfaces 13 merging into two parallel surfaces 14. The plunger 2 is bored to receive the nipple 9, and within the bore it houses a spring-pressed piston 10 which is provided with an axial hole for the passage of air and also a rubber facing washer 11. In the operation of applying the coupling to the nipple and with the arms 6 of the spring 7 initially between the inclined surfaces 13, the nipple first contacts with the piston 10, causing it to move against the pressure of the spring 12, and then effects axial movement of the plunger 2 within the casing 1. This latter movement first forces the spring arms 6 towards the narrow part of the slot 5, which results in a reduction in the diameter of the circular part of the spring and causes this part of the spring to grip the threads on the nipple, and then between the parallel surfaces 14 to maintain the spring in this contracted condition, thus locking the coupling and nipple together.
