Abstract

580,318. Stopping or coupling pipes. SHAW, J. Sept. 6, 1944, No. 17061, [Classes 99 (i) and 99 (ii)] [Also in Group XXII] A coupling or stopping device for tubes, particularly adapted for temporarily sealing the ends of a tube to be subjected to a bending operation whilst filled with liquid under pressure, comprises a coupling member or cap 2 into a bore of which the thinwalled tube 12 fits, the bore having spaced arcuate recesses 13 and a resilient ring 17 which is compressed between a bolt head 18 and a washer 16 by a nut 20 so as to expand the wall of the tube into the recesses 13. A sleeve 1 adapted to be slid over the tube before the application of the cap 2 has a bayonet-type connection 3 therewith, a spring-pressed ball 6 .in the sleeve being adapted to engage one of two recesses in the cap corresponding to the coupled and uncoupling positions. The sleeve has internal recesses 15 to allow withdrawal of the tube after it has been expanded into the recesses 13.
