Aug. 27, 1934, No. 24673. Convention date, Aug. 31, 1933. Drawings to Specification. [Class 39 (i)] A discharge tube such as a thermionic valve comprising a control electrode controlling the discharge in dependence upon input potentials applied thereto and an anode feeding a high impedance load circuit with a current or potential dependent upon the input potential has the inner wall of the envelope treated, covered or coated to reduce secondary electron emissivity over at least that part of the envelope liable to be impinged upon by electrons from the discharge. The wall may be coated with a matte or diffusing surface such that fewer secondary electrons are emitted than primary electrons are received, or such that the secondary electron emissivity is less than that of glass. The portion of the bulb surrounding the electrode system of a pentode used in an amplifying system may be covered with finely divided carbon, either by smoking the bulb with a turpentine torch or by spraying it with a suspension of lampblack in alcohol and wiping off the deposit excepting that around the electrodes. A suspension of finely divided aluminium oxide in water may be used instead.
