[Class 123 (ii)] A separator within a steam and water drum 10 comprises a dry pan formed by a central perforated plate 52 and imperforate side plates 53 extending longitudinally above the water level, an upwardly flaring baffle 62 spaced below the pan with inlets 63 at opposite sides providing a separating space 61. Flanges on the pan plates form a pair of baffles 54 and an upstanding impingement plate 65 is secured between flanges of the pair of plates forming the baffle 62. The perforations 60 in the dry pan are preferably confined to the relatively quiescent end of the drum and outlets 70 to the opposite end in order to lengthen the steam flow path. The separator is particularly adapted for use in a boiler comprising a vertical bank of water-tubes connecting an upper and a lower drum with a laterally adjoining furnace lined with water tubes and separated from the tube bank space for a portion of its length by a water-tube wall, burners in the front wall discharging fuel horizontally and the furnace gases returning in a series of transverse passes through the tube bank space.
